How To Thrift For Experiences

I recently went to a taper candle-painting worskshop, and it reminded me of how easy and fun it can be to thrift items that turn into memorable experiences. It also made me think about all the moments I’ve already thrifted for like game nights. So this month, we’re thrifting with intention: finding ways to make memories, spark creativity, and enjoy the season to the fullest. Here are some ideas on how to make thrifting trips more about moments than materials.

Thrift for a Cozy Movie or Game Night

Build a collection of board games, card decks, or DVDs. Grab cozy blankets, candles, mugs or popcorn bowls if you need some.  I did this around Halloween with tapered candles, candlesticks, and other festive items for the coziest Friday family movie nights, even the kids loved it!

Plan a DIY Crafting Afternoon

Pick up materials for crafting projects: blank journals, frames, baskets, yarn, or vintage fabrics. Then host a DIY session at home with friends. Not only do you get the thrill of creating something yourself, but you’re also repurposing items in a way that’s both sustainable and sentimental.

Make a Kids’ Creativity Bin or Art Cart

Instead of buying new craft supplies, thrift items to make an art cart or craft bin. These come in handy during winter break! I made one for my kids and it’s been one of best thrifted experiences yet.

Build a Thrift-to Table Gathering

Decorate with thrifted vases, candles, or tableware. Encourage guests to bring something secondhand or homemade. The focus isn’t on spending, but on creativity, connection, and shared experiences.

Gift Experiences Instead of Things

Instead of gifting another item, create experiences with thrifted items like a “game night kit,” a “movie marathon basket,” or a “DIY crafting box.” These gifts are thoughtful, unique, and show you’re giving your time and creativity, not just an object.

Start a “Bring Something Thrifted” Club

Instead of food or drinks, everyone brings one thrifted item to share:

  • A book
  • A candleholder
  • A mug
  • A scarf

It becomes a fun, story-filled sharing moment at every meeting.
