Should I Thrift It? How To Know If Something Is Worth Thrifting

We’ve all been there: you find yourself standing in a thrift store, holding something, and wondering, ‘Should I thrift this?’ We’re sharing questions we often ask ourselves to ensure that thrifted finds are treasures, and not just another impulse buy. Questions that will help us and you make choices that align with your style, sustainability goals, and the kind of wardrobe you really want to build.

Assess the Quality

Questions to Ask:

  • Is the item in good condition? Check for any stains, tears, missing buttons, or broken zippers. Some issues might be fixable, but consider the cost and effort involved.
  • What is the fabric like? Feel the material and look for natural fibers like cotton, wool, silk, or linen, which often last longer and wear better over time.
  • Is the construction solid? Inspect seams, hems, and lining to ensure they are well-made and durable.

Evaluate the Fit

Questions to Ask:

  • Does it fit well, or can it be altered? Try it on if possible. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, think about whether it’s worth altering.
  • Is it comfortable? An uncomfortable piece is unlikely to get much wear, no matter how stylish it is.

Consider Your Personal Style

Questions to Ask:

  • Does it align with your existing wardrobe? Think about how the item complements what you already own. Can you mix and match it easily with other pieces?
  • Is it true to your style? It’s easy to get carried away with unique thrift finds, but make sure it reflects your personal taste and style.

Determine the Versatility

Questions to Ask:

  • Can you wear it in multiple settings? Consider if it’s suitable for different occasions or seasons. Versatile pieces are often the most valuable.
  • How many outfits can you create with it? A good rule of thumb is to think of at least three different outfits you can make using the piece.

Reflect on Its Purpose

Questions to Ask:

  • Why do you want this item? Are you buying it because it fills a gap in your wardrobe, or is it an impulse buy?
  • Will it serve a specific need? Think about whether the item serves a practical purpose or adds value to your lifestyle.

Think About Sustainability

Questions to Ask:

  • Does it support your sustainability goals? Buying secondhand is inherently more sustainable, but consider the long-term impact. Will you use this piece enough to justify its purchase?
  • Is it a timeless piece? Trend-driven items can quickly fall out of favor. Opt for classic, timeless pieces that can transcend seasons and trends.

Examine the Price

Questions to Ask:

  • Is it worth the price? Even thrift stores can sometimes overprice items. Make sure the cost aligns with the quality and value you perceive.
  • Is it a good deal compared to similar items? If you’re unsure about the price, compare it to similar pieces or check online to see what similar new items cost.

Weigh the Sentimental Value

Questions to Ask:

Does this item evoke any memories or emotions? Sometimes a piece might remind you of a loved one, a specific time in your life, or a cherished experience. Reflect on how this emotional connection might enhance its value to you.

Will this piece become a cherished item? Consider whether this item has the potential to become a meaningful part of your collection, something you’ll treasure for years to come.

Is it worth keeping for its story? Some items have unique stories or histories that add to their charm. Think about whether the story behind the item adds enough value to make it worth purchasing.
