What To Do This Summer? Try a Renaissance Fair

I recently downloaded a summer bucket idea list to make the most out of our summer. The ideas ranged from lying in the grass watching the clouds to trying something new like attending a Renaissance fair. I have to admit, the first and only thing I can think of when it comes to Renaissance fairs are turkey legs 🙂 I tend to do the same things with my family and friends, so I’m open to trying something new this summer. So I asked a few of my history and fantasy enthusiast friends to get the details on how a newbie can cross this off a summer bucket list. Here’s what they told me:

First, What is a Renaissance Fair?

A Renaissance fair is a themed event that transports participants to the Renaissance period, typically spanning the 14th to 17th centuries in Europe. Imagine stepping into a lively marketplace bustling with costumed characters, artisans crafting goods by hand, and performers showcasing jousting tournaments and stage plays. It’s an immersive experience that celebrates the art, culture, and spirit of the Renaissance era.

What to Expect at a Renaissance Fair

As you enter a Renaissance fair, prepare to be swept away by its festive atmosphere. The fairgrounds are usually sprawling and divided into themed areas, each offering its own set of attractions. You’ll encounter stages alive with period music and dance performances, vendors selling handmade wares, and perhaps even a castle or village square bustling with activity.

What to Wear

One of the joys of attending a Renaissance fair is dressing the part! Many attendees embrace the spirit of the event by donning period-appropriate costumes such as peasant garb, nobility attire, or even fantastical outfits inspired by knights and wizards. If dressing up isn’t your style, fear not—casual attire is perfectly acceptable, though you might find yourself tempted to join in the fun of costumes once you arrive. Key Activities and Attractions

From thrilling jousting matches that echo with the clash of armor to comedic performances that tickle your medieval funny bone, Renaissance fairs offer a rich tapestry of activities. Wander through artisan stalls where skilled craftspeople showcase their talents in pottery, leatherwork, and jewelry making. Don’t miss the chance to watch historical reenactments or participate in interactive games that transport you back in time.

Food and Drink

No fair experience is complete without sampling the hearty fare on offer. Indulge in iconic treats like giant turkey legs, savory meat pies, and sweet honey mead—the beverage of choice for many fairgoers. Food vendors often prepare their offerings on-site, adding to the authentic atmosphere and ensuring a satisfying culinary journey through the Renaissance.

Shopping and Artisan Crafts

Supporting local artisans is a highlight of any Renaissance fair visit. Browse through stalls filled with handcrafted goods such as intricate woodwork, elaborate costumes, and beautifully designed pottery. Many vendors are passionate about their crafts and are happy to share insights into their creative process, making each purchase a unique and meaningful experience.

The Benefits of Going as a Friend Group to a Renaissance Fair

Are you debating whether you should go to the Renaissance fair on your own or with friends? While going on your own can be a great opportunity to meet new people and improve your confidence, it can also be a nerve-racking experience. Instead, most people choose to go with a group of friends so that they can enjoy their day. This is something you should consider if you’re going to be traveling or you want to feel reassured in a new environment. Let’s take a closer look at the advantages of going with friends to a Renaissance fair.

To Make New Memories

First of all, Renaissance fairs are all about having fun. You get to step back in time, enjoy cosplay and take part in the activities. This makes it the perfect setting to go with friends. You can all have fun together and make new memories.

To Be Social

Let’s not forget that Renaissance fairs are a great place to make new friends. This is more likely to happen if you’re in a group to begin with. You can feel more confident speaking to others and your friends can help everybody come together. So, there’s a lot of power in going as a group to this type of event.

Feeling Good in Your Costume

If you’re not used to cosplaying, it can be daunting. While you know others are dressing up for the Renaissance fair; you still feel nervous dressing up. This is particularly true when you’re going on your own.

This is another reason why you should consider going to a Renaissance fair with a group of friends. You’re going to feel more confident when you have familiar faces around you. They’ll hype you up and you can feel great about your costume. What’s more, you can all wear outfits together, which is a lot of fun.

So call that spontaneous friend and try something fresh and new!
